In today's technologically-driven market, it's relatively easy to commission custom software. But is the user interface aesthetically appealing? Is it accessible and easy to use? Is the layout intelligent and is it efficient? These are the types of questions UX & UI design aims to address. It doesn't just look at interface functionality, but at human psychology. It aims to understand how we respond to different interface designs, with the goal of creating ever more intuitive and pleasing user experiences.
Example project you may work on
Your client is a non-profit organisation that provides support to victims of gender-based violence, as well as access to social justice. They’ve had extremely limited funding to date and operate simply off an old Wordpress site. They’ve noticed that visitors to their site access different pages, but seldom go on to seek access to social justice services or local welfare services. Working in teams, your task is to build a wireframe and prototype of a new site that will increase usage and access for all of the services provided by the non-profit.

iX Winter is an intensive learning experience designed to help you make the most of your winter break.
For the first week, you'll focus primarily on picking up new industry-relevant skills at a rapid pace. The second week, following a weekend break, will focus primarily on a social impact project that you can add to your resume and discuss in job interviews.
Unlike many other online programs, you'll have support from your teachers and teaching assistants throughout the day so you're never stuck on a problem for too long.
"iXperience was a one-of-a-kind learning immersion. I gained experience and knowledge in ways I never had before. I can now say that I have incredible new skills and have used what I learned to make an impact at a startup company in Cape Town."
Initially I had thought, as I’d imagine many do, that user experience design is specific to technology, applied when designing a website or an app for instance. However, after my first class I realized it can really be applied to so much more; a brand, a service, or a product. In class we’re learning by actually doing.
iX taught me to understand that UX design does not really require any new skills. Rather it focuses on using existing knowledge and applications to make things anew and/or better than they were before. It is closer to looking at the world through new and varying perspectives. This experience has been exciting, rewarding, and inspiring to see where this new-found perspective can bring me in the future.
I have never taken a bootcamp style program like this where I get to focus on skills in just one field all day everyday, so this is a great way way to learn, hone, and practice in just a matter of a few weeks. It is more effective than teaching yourself, and less time than taking a semester long course in college.
The class definitely taught me a lot about design and the field, while giving me an idea as to what pursuing a career in design may be like and the skills needed.
Since 2014, iX has dispersed more than $2 million in financial aid to enable access to our programs.
